The General Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB)

The interface described by IEEE 488 standard, which will be referred to as GPIB in this chapter, is used to connect instruments to test and measurement systems. Examples of such instruments are digital voltmeters, storage oscilloscopes, printers, and plotters. In general, these instruments are called GPIB devices. These devices operate under the coordination of a controller. Most modern systems consist of a cluster of such devices connected to one or more computers. In such a system, one of the computers will become the controller. Historically, the interface was developed by Hewlett-Packard in 1965. At that time, the interface was called HPIB, and a general standard did not exist. In 1975, it was formulated as IEEE 488 and was called IEEE Standard Digital Interface for Programmable Instrumentation. The standard specified the electrical, mechanical, and hardware aspects, i.e., the signals, their functioning, and purpose. Instrument manufacturers used the interface freely without adhering to a standard protocol in communicating with instruments. Instruments meant for the same purpose, yet manufactured by different manufacturers required widely varied commands. Some instruments made measurements in response to a command, while some other instruments of similar type made measurements without a command at all.

Further, there were no agreed data formats between instruments sending data and instruments receiving data. This situation led to the development of an extension to the IEEE 488 standard. The new standard was published in 1987 and was The IEEE 488.2 compliant devices must present data through data formats and codes specified in the standard. The standard also specifies a minimum set of mandatory control sequences or commands and suggests a few other optional commands. It also provides a standard status-reporting model that must be implemented by the instrument manufacturers so that determining the status of instruments will be easier for the instrument programmers. Although not yet a standard, The Standard Commands for Programmable Instrumentation (SCPI) put together in 1990 agrees upon a standard set of commands for various instrument categories. Accordingly, all digital voltmeters manufactured by different manufacturers will respond to the same GPIB command. This section describes the electrical and mechanical specifications of the GPIB interface as well as the signal description and their purpose.

All GPIB devices are connected using a special cable with each end having the male as well as the female ends of the connector. This permits piggyback connections of cables. The devices can be connected either in a chained manner (i.e., device B connected to device A, device C connected to device B, etc.) or in a star configuration (i.e., device A, B, C, etc. connected to a common node). A maximum of 15 devices can be connected to the bus. The maximum separation between two devices is 4 m with an average separation of not more than 2 m. Among the ground lines are a cable shield line, a signal ground line, three ground return lines for the handshaking signals, and three other ground return lines for three of the interface management lines. All signals used are standard TTL signal levels with negative logic.

In the eyes of others, one could be seen as someone who is a workaholic, and they might even admire them. If they have achieved a lot, there could be plenty of people who look up to them.

No Effect

Even so, one could be used to feeling drained and even exhausted, and it might be a challenge for them to keep going at times. They might have moments when they feel as though they can’t go on or they might want to have a rest, but this is not going to be an option for them.

If they do, they may end up coming crashing down, and they are not going to want to feel this way. One might also believe that other people will see how flawed they are if they change their behaviour.

California Failed To Protect Its Citizens, And Now The Promise To Fix Infrastructure?

When Arnold Schwarzenegger was California Governor he attempted to allot funds towards the repair and maintenance of the levee system and yet, couldn’t get the democratic California legislature at the time to accept his budget, instead they had endless social programs and pet projects to fund. Some folks do not remember their history, but I am not one of them, you see here we are in 2017 and we have a dam crisis brewing at the Oroville Dam, which happens to be about 1/2 of Northern and Central California’s water supply – it is the main dam with 9-smaller dams above it. As I pen this article all 9 dams are 100% full and Oroville Dam needs repairs on its spillways which are in jeopardy of total failure.

Now then, the leftist newspaper (yes, I am a bias writer in hindsight of this on-going fiasco), The Los Angeles Times, had an interesting article on February 24, 2017 titled; “California Governor Jerry Brown proposes speeding up water and flood-protection projects after the winter’s big storms,” by John Myers which had a quote from the governor:

“We have our aging infrastructure and it’s maxed out,” Brown said during a news conference at the state Capitol. The plan, largely an acceleration of existing plans to fund infrastructure needs, requires approval of the Legislature.”

The one page article also stated that the California Governor contacted Donald Trump for fast-tracking environmental rules for some key repair projects like the Oroville Dam spillway. The Governor also wants to set aside $437 million of the California budget to fix levees and storm drainage in the state. Infrastructure experts estimate this to be a drop in the bucket to the overdue repairs needed in state infrastructure which are thought to be $187 Billion to bring the CA infrastructure up to an A-grade by the American Society of Engineers. When California Governor Jerry Brown gave a press conference one reporter asked him about who was to blame. He deflected these questions explaining that there are many infrastructure maintenance projects that desperately need budget monies, but monies are not unlimited, and named important social programs, health care, and legacy costs (pensions for former and current state employees). We all understand the realities, and yet, California is to blame for their own failures a and whereas they can divert blame way from themselves, they may not be able to divert that much water or snowpack runoff in time to prevent the largest dam disaster in US History.
